Eating Disorders
The therapists were not considerate to me - it seemed like they were bored, having heard the same story repeatedly. The group sessions were too large for me to really get involved or discuss the issues. I was forced to attend meals three times a day. No one forced me to eat, but the expectation was there without any consideration for current eating habits or necessary changes. I felt awful every day during and after meals, feeling forced to satisfy my food ‘obligations.’ This program is designed to work in one way exactly. There’s no understanding that people like me need tenderness and direction and advice, or different approaches. They just stuck to their very general procedure. I was made to meet with a ‘nutritionist’ and her approach was very calorie count based. I was directed to look at food labels and log my food and weigh myself every two weeks. It was not only rigid, but it was also extremely counterproductive. I’m in ED treatment with an individual therapist with intimate experience with ERC and was warned that this place was NOT a group to go for actual help. They reinforced my opinions and understanding. They also helped me realize that the time I had with the ‘nutritionist’ was in itself trauma inducing.
