Operated by people in recovery, Tree House Recovery in Costa Mesa, California, treats clients struggling with alcoholism or drug addiction. They employ their mind-body-social method to create a holistic program that was created by Founder Justin McMillen. The goal is to “take the struggle of getting sober and use it to bond people together. In that struggle, there emerges a camaraderie made of trust, vulnerability, success, and support that feels like home.” Treatment bridges multiple levels of care, featuring a primary men’s partial hospitalization program (PHP) with housing, alongside a co-ed intensive outpatient program (IOP).

Follow 8 Connected Steps to Rebuild Mind, Body, and Social Ties

Instead of putting bandaids on symptoms, the Tree House approach looks at the root causes of addiction: physical breakdown and feeling isolated. They work to heal the mind, body and social factors driving addiction using an 8-part curriculum:

  • Addiction education (relapse prevention and the science of addiction)
  • Process groups (talking things out with peers)
  • One-on-One therapy (2 private clinical counseling sessions per week)
  • Writing therapy (2 one-on-one trauma-informed counseling sessions per week)
  • Fitness-based experiential therapy “ESM” (daily workouts to help balance neurochemistry)
  • Team-based experiential therapy “ABIT” (action-based MMA meant to help clients bond, and build trust)
  • Yoga therapy (meant to help clients regulate emotions through movement, breathwork, and meditation)
  • Adventure therapy “Recovery in Action” (clinician-guided events in the real world like camping, surfing and 5ks meant to help experience what a healthy sober life can be)

Five days a week, clients sweat it out in group workouts. Forcing the body to move acts like a hard reset and can help improve sleep, lower anxiety, and speed up the healing process of post-acute withdrawal. When clients face these daily challenges alongside other people, the focus shifts to what a person can handle right now, making it easy to realize they are not defined by their addiction.

Enjoy an Environment Designed to Ground and Support the Mind

Set in a vibrant Portland neighborhood, clients at Tree House cook together like a family in full kitchens, play music in comfortable lounges, or relax in the backyard under the Pacific Northwest sky. The high-energy gym space transitions into a peaceful studio for restorative yoga twice a week. Through breathwork and meditation, individuals learn to quiet their racing thoughts and sit comfortably in silence, balancing out the active portions of their day.

Access the Fitness, Counseling, and Tools That Keep Clients Grounded

Instead of rushing back into daily life, individuals can transition into structured housing for up to a full year, giving them room to hold down regular jobs without losing their footing. Through the co-ed intensive outpatient program (IOP), both men and women keep accessing the vital components of recovery: like group fitness, relapse prevention, and group counseling, so they can rebuild their lives while being anchored to a community.

Testimonial
The overall treatment while attending treehouse was eye opening, I was able to find myself in a safe place surrounded by people who honestly care about me. I was able to open up and be vulnerable with men. Treehouse saved my life I'm coming up on 18months sober and I still have the momentum to keep going thanks to the tools I learned at treehouse.

Unpack Trauma Through Guided 1:1 Writing Sessions
Unpack Trauma Through Guided 1:1 Writing Sessions
The writing therapy program gives clients a private space to face heavy stuff from their past. Clients meet one-on-one with a writing counselor to tackle a specific topic and put their thoughts onto the page. Writing down these painful, unsaid memories can strip away their power, helping clients safely process trauma and walk away with an incredible tool for emotional clarity.
Teach the Mind to Handle Sudden Stress with ABI Therapy
Teach the Mind to Handle Sudden Stress with ABI Therapy
The Action-Based Induction Therapy (ABIT) program uses high-energy group activities to strengthen the brain. Three days a week, clients come together for collaborative challenges, like navigating ocean waves in inflatable rafts or practicing disciplined martial arts sequences in the gym. These fast-paced, unpredictable settings force clients to manage stress, communicate under pressure, and rely on the person next to them.
Get an Education on How the Body Heals
Get an Education on How the Body Heals
The addiction education program helps people understand what is happening in their brains. Five days a week, clients connect science to exactly what they are going through. For example, learning about temporary challenges like Post-Acute Withdrawal Syndrome (PAWS) changes everything. It shows individuals that emotional roller coasters aren't personal failures, but a normal part of healing.
Receive Help For the Whole Family, Not Just the Person in Recovery
Receive Help For the Whole Family, Not Just the Person in Recovery
It is normal to feel worried and unsure of how to help a loved one through recovery. The Tree House family program is designed to support spouses, parents, and family members as they heal their own side of the street. Through virtual sessions, families learn to clear up boundary confusion and shift from anxious caretaking to a healthier, more sustainable way to love.
