About Childrens Home Society of South Dakota Black Hills Childrens Home
Children's Home Society of South Dakota operates Black Hills Children's Home, which provides specialized residential treatment for children ages 4-14 who have experienced abuse, trauma, or behavioral challenges. Focused on individualized care, the program offers a structured, supportive environment with therapeutic and educational services. With an average stay of 12-14 months, children have the time and resources to heal, build resilience, and develop essential skills for a brighter future.
Therapeutic Approach and Education
The facility uses a team approach to care, offering individual, group, and family therapy, along with psychiatric services and specialized education. Each child undergoes a comprehensive assessment to develop a Master Treatment Plan with tailored therapy goals. The on-site Owen School offers a 6:1 student-to-staff ratio, full IEP implementation, and additional support services such as Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Speech/Language support. A well-rounded curriculum fosters confidence and growth.
Home-Like Living and Supportive Environment
Children grow and heal in a warm, home-like setting with caring support. A dedicated team helps them rebuild trust, develop social skills, and become more independent. They receive nutritious meals, learn about Native American history and traditions, and enjoy fun activities. This structured yet nurturing environment provides stability, confidence, and hope, preparing them to successfully return to their families or communities.
