Founded in 2012 by Rebecca Ryan after her own experience navigating autism services for her son, Sandbox ABA provides individualized applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy for children and teens with autism. The Austin-based center builds treatment around each child’s learning needs, with support for communication, play, social interaction, adaptive skills, and behaviors that interfere with learning. Families begin with a free consultation, where caregivers discuss their goals, learn about the program, and tour the clinic. Parent involvement is a core part of each child’s treatment plan from the start.

Learning Through Practice and Play

Sandbox ABA uses structured and natural environment teaching to help children learn skills and use them in everyday situations. Therapists may break skills into smaller steps, use prompting and reinforcement, and practice communication and social skills during play and daily routines. Treatment can progress from 1:1 sessions to practice with peers, small groups, schools, camps, and community settings. As children gain skills, the team reduces support and focuses on areas where they still need help.

Bringing ABA Strategies into Daily Routines

Parent and caregiver training is a required part of Sandbox ABA’s treatment program. Staff teach caregivers how to use ABA strategies at home and in the community so they can confidently respond to challenges and support their child’s growing skills. For children and teens who need intensive intervention, treatment may target specific routines such as meals, getting dressed, and toileting. Parents participate in this care, while other caregivers and teachers may join when their involvement supports the child’s progress.
