About Safer Foundation Safer Counseling and Wellness Center
Finding stability after incarceration takes more than determination. Since 1972, Safer Foundation, a Chicago-based nonprofit, has been helping justice-involved individuals rebuild their lives through outpatient behavioral health and comprehensive reentry services. Their approach blends counseling, employment, education, and advocacy with practical support that removes barriers and creates opportunities for lasting independence.
Stability and Support
The center offers 1-on-1 and group counseling, court-approved anger management, mental health services and substance use treatment with assessments that meet parole and court requirements. Care is available in person and virtually, ensuring flexibility no matter a client’s schedule or location. The organization also provides legal help such as record sealing, along with workforce training, job placement, and educational pathways. Clients receive assistance with housing referrals, supplemental nutrition assistance program (SNAP) and Medicaid enrollment, transportation, clothing, and identification (ID) recovery so that progress is not disrupted by everyday barriers.
Evidence-Based Care Approach
Counseling begins with an assessment that sets clear goals and includes regular check-ins to measure growth. Safer Foundation uses evidence-based therapies such as cognitive behavioral approaches to help clients manage stress, build coping skills, and respond to challenges in healthier ways. At the same time, the team incorporates a strengths-based philosophy that recognizes each individual’s potential, not just their past. With decades of experience and a community-centered model, the center provides pathways to dignity, stability, and second chances that last.
