About S.M.I.L.E.
Understanding the barriers that underserved communities face, S.M.I.L.E. INC. provides culturally sensitive outpatient mental health and substance use treatment alongside reentry services. The nonprofit serves adolescents, adults, couples, families, and justice-involved individuals, particularly those from underserved BIPOC communities. Their mission centers on helping people overcome adversity, reconnect with their families, and build independence after incarceration. Through counseling and their 360° Beyond the Bars program, clients address addiction, emotional and behavioral challenges, and the difficulties of returning to their communities.
A Holistic Approach to Recovery
S.M.I.L.E. INC. uses a holistic approach called SEMPH, addressing spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical wellness. Clinicians combine cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, and trauma-focused counseling to help clients understand their behaviors, work through difficult experiences, and improve relationships. Their Christian-oriented services incorporate prayer, meditation, art therapy, and spiritual empowerment courses, giving clients opportunities to explore their faith and manage stress. Family counseling further supports their goal of strengthening relationships and reconnecting loved ones throughout recovery.
Building Skills Beyond the Therapy Room
Beyond counseling, the center helps clients prepare for everyday responsibilities through practical workshops and career development services. Financial literacy classes teach money management, while computer training and GED preparation support education and employment goals. Clients practice resume writing and interviewing skills to prepare for job opportunities. Their reentry services address challenges that often follow incarceration, including finding housing, obtaining identification documents, accessing benefits, and meeting probation requirements. Together, these services help individuals work toward greater independence and stability in their communities.
