About North Charles Institute for Mental Health & Addiction Services
Located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, near The Cambridge Hospital and easily reached from Porter Square, this outpatient program treats adults with opioid use disorder through methadone-based care. Serving over 50 communities in eastern Massachusetts, the program combines medical treatment with counseling and psychiatric services. Clients find a smaller, community-centered setting where care feels personal, recovery goals are emphasized, and support extends beyond opioid treatment to mental health and co-occurring conditions.
Recovery Through Medication and Counseling
Recovery builds through medication therapy, counseling, and evidence-based psychiatric support. Clinicians design individualized care plans that may include diagnostic evaluations, safety planning, and ongoing counseling. Trauma treatment, family therapy, and health education are available, while nursing staff and psychiatrists monitor progress and medication. This coordinated approach helps stabilize clients, reduce relapse risks, and foster a path toward stronger relationships, healthier habits, and lasting recovery.
Specialized Care and Unique Programs
Unique services strengthen the program’s impact. Pregnant and postpartum women receive prenatal education, reproductive health support, and a Plan of Safe Care. Clients gain access to specialty services through Cambridge Health Alliance, including HIV and hepatitis treatment, couples therapy, and intensive outpatient care. Take-home methadone, relapse prevention for homeless men, and aftercare planning provide stability and motivation as clients rebuild their lives and move toward greater independence.
