About Mental Health America of Wisconsin
With more than 90 years of work in mental health advocacy, education, and community services, Mental Health America of Wisconsin connects people to treatment and resources across the state. At its Milwaukee location on West Lisbon Avenue, the MHA-WI Wellness Clinic provides outpatient counseling for children, adolescents, and adults facing mental health or substance use challenges. Licensed therapists address psychiatric and emotional difficulties, while the organization extends its work through family programs and community-based support.
Counseling and Therapeutic Approaches
Therapists help adults address depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), trauma, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), along with attention difficulties, eating disorders, substance use, grief, insomnia, and relationship concerns. They use cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), interpersonal therapy, behavioral therapy, and mindfulness and relaxation techniques, choosing methods according to each person's circumstances. Therapists can also work with psychiatrists when medication may help. The clinic currently accepts new patients and referrals.
Family Programs and Peer Support
Through Strong Families Healthy Homes, MHA Wisconsin provides case management for parents and pregnant women facing mental health or substance use challenges. Staff conduct home visits, teach parenting and communication skills, offer family psychoeducation, and guide participants in managing prescribed medications. The organization also runs virtual peer groups for LGBTQ+ individuals and neurodivergent young people. Its Alternatives to Suicide groups welcome adults experiencing suicidal thoughts, while Survivors Helping Survivors connects people grieving a suicide loss. These groups provide non-clinical peer support rather than outpatient suicide treatment.
