Affirmation: Something declared to be true; a positive statement or judgment.

Affirmations are a great tool to use in recovery, and the right ones can inspire and deliver strength. When I feel myself slipping into negative thinking, I lean on these to regain a positive state of mind:

Affirmation #1 Let go, and let God

This is always a challenge – it’s hard for me to let go of control. I like to fool myself into thinking I have control over a situation and can, therefore, determine its outcome. This, of course, couldn’t be any farther from the truth – and shouldering the burden of this control often leaves me spiritually and emotionally fatigued.

Once I learned to trust in God and let Him take the wheel, however, I could appreciate the situation for what it was and be confident that I was exactly where I needed to be at that moment in time.

Affirmation #2 Have an attitude of gratitude

As addicts, it’s natural to believe that everything bad happens to us – that we always seem to get the short end of the stick. We tend to dwell in this negativity, oftentimes missing the amazing things that are occurring all around us.

Having gratitude shifts your mindset and takes you out of complaining mode. It allows you to be grateful for all you do have, rather than focusing on what you don’t.

So go ahead and spread that positive energy! No one wants to hang out with someone who’s always down in the dumps.

Affirmation #3 To keep it, you’ve got to give it away

The cornerstone of maintaining your sobriety is getting the focus off you. And the best way to do that is by helping others.

Giving back not only gets you out of your own head, it’s rewarding. It gives you a sense of purpose, not to mention, a much-needed change in perspective.

Recovery Tools: Positive affirmations can be an excellent tool for those trying to build a life free of addiction, as they can boost your overall motivation and enduring positivity.

Affirmation #4 If nothing changes, nothing changes

Waiting for life to change is a pretty passive solution. If you want something, go out and get it! Be proactive.
By refusing to change your behavior or mentality, you’re going to get what you’ve always gotten.
