Phoenix House was established in 1967 after 6 individuals with heroin addiction attended a detox program together in New York. After detox, they moved into a brownstone in Manhattan to live as a community and encouraged one another in their sobriety. Phoenix House's namesake refers to a phoenix, a mythical creature, which is said to be able to rise from ashes. Phoenix House strives to help individuals rise again from any destruction substance use has had on their lives and find a road to recovery. They approach addiction a chronic disease rather than a moral failing, emphasizing tailored care and treating the whole person through a variety of treatment methods. They serve children, teens, and adults, and have a special focus on serving veterans, military personnel, and their families. Their services include vocational and educational support, health and fitness programs, clinical care, and medication-assisted treatment in outpatient and residential settings.
