About Hugarafl
Free, Holistic Care in Coastal Reykjavík
Hugarafl is a free, community-based mental health center in coastal Reykjavík, Iceland, that supports adults facing mental health challenges. The center offers outpatient group therapy with a holistic approach that considers each person’s life story—not just a diagnosis. Clients join weekly groups that focus on inner beliefs, stress, routines, goal-setting, and returning to work or school.
Anyone is welcome. There are no referral, diagnosis, or residency requirements. Most groups are in Icelandic, but Hugarafl runs at least two English-speaking groups at any time. They also sometimes have groups in other languages, depending on staff, volunteers, and treatment seekers.
Movement, Mindfulness, and Connection
Group sessions include fun and healing activities like open-water swimming, yoga, and art workshops. Hugarafl also offers weekly one-on-one support and family therapy every other Thursday. These sessions include mindfulness and psychoeducation to help people feel more confident, connected, and in control of their recovery journey.
Led by Lived Experience
The team includes a psychologist and 2 occupational therapists, peer supporters, and volunteers. Many people on the team have experienced mental health challenges, so they are empathetic in their approach. Together, they create a safe and respectful space where clients find empowerment, support, and hope. The focus is always on working with—not on—people.
