Åsgård Psychiatric Hospital

The Åsgård Psychiatric Hospital is a public psychiatric hospital operated by the University Hospital of North Norway on the west side of Tromsøya, about two kilometers from central Tromsø. Referrals bring patients from across Finnmark, Troms, and parts of Nordland for inpatient and outpatient psychiatric and substance use care. The campus spans several buildings and large outdoor grounds, and treatment runs through Norway's public health system rather than private pay.

Manage Severe and Complex Psychiatric Conditions

The hospital's psychiatric department treats adults with serious and complex conditions that go beyond what community mental health centers can manage, including an acute inpatient section and a geriatric section for older adults with severe psychiatric disorders and dementia-related symptoms. A dedicated unit treats psychotic disorders alongside co-occurring substance use, assigning each patient a multidisciplinary team under national clinical guidelines. The unit also admits pregnant patients with complex, unstable conditions.

Specialized Substance Use Treatment

A separate substance use department provides detoxification, inpatient rehabilitation, and outpatient care for adults and young people referred from across northern Norway. Treatment draws on motivational interviewing, psychoeducation groups, relapse prevention counseling, and medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorder, moving patients between levels of care as their needs change. Patients can also stay at an on-site patient hotel during treatment.

Compulsory and Justice-Involved Psychiatric Care

Some admissions here are not voluntary. The acute psychiatric section can deliver compulsory treatment under Norway's mental health legislation for adults who pose a risk to themselves or others. A dedicated security psychiatric section, with treatment and rehabilitation units, serves patients referred through the criminal justice system, including those needing a violence risk assessment or court-ordered care.
