Alpas Wellness
Break free and be well: that is the idea behind Alpas Wellness, whose name comes from the Tagalog word for breaking free. Its residential center in La Plata, Maryland, and outpatient center in Sterling, Virginia, treat substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions, grounded in a mission to create a safe, inclusive space where people heal their minds and bodies and rediscover their purpose.A Promise to Give BackAlpas began with a promise. During early recovery, founder Sean Smith resolved to build a place that gives back, a commitment shaped by loss, lived experience, and a conviction that care should account for the complexity of each person. That promise grew into a community of people aligned around a shared purpose, doing meaningful work the right way, first in La Plata, Maryland, and now in Northern Virginia. No Single Path to RecoveryBuilt as an alternative to one-size-fits-all treatment, Alpas pairs consistency and meaningful connection with care for the whole person, not simply the disorder. Therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing (MI), and experiential therapy build practical coping skills for staying sober independently. Levels of care run from detox and residential treatment in Maryland to partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs in Virginia.Where Nature Meets NeuroscienceAlpas treats environment with the same intention as clinical care, calling it an integral part of healing rather than a backdrop. A collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania Center for Neuroaesthetics shapes design at both centers, where living plants, green walls, and saltwater and freshwater aquariums keep spaces far from sterile. At the flagship Maryland center, a refresh room provides a quiet place to reset, with adjustable lighting, nature scenes, and calming sounds.
