I was at BRS back in spring of 2017. The reason for which I write a review now is I frequently find myself referring people here. Though, I did eventually end up going out west where I finally achieved long term sobriety (3 years clean!) I had been to upwards of 20 programs in Michigan over a decade all before 26 battling my addiction to heroin and crack. At the time, BRS was considered a holistic facility which scared me because withdrawal medications were a necessity in my case. I spent nearly a month in the detox cabin and was provided every possible avenue of comfort, relief and maintenance meds to assist with my detox. The staff were incredibly diligent and easily deserves 10 stars for their commitment, compassion and patience for those they’re treating. From the doctors to nurses and behavioral techs across the board earned my eternal admiration and gratitude for the level of competence and personal relationships forged. The facility as a whole easily has the least institutional vibe of anywhere I’ve been. It felt like home, or dare I even say a resort, with the incredible amenities offered. Pool table, movie theatre, computers, hot tubs, sauna, private bed/bathrooms equipped with tv’s. Patients have the ability to choose their own program, be it 12-step, SMART, or religious. Classes vary from informational, to emotional healing, coping, and interactive classes like physical activities, music therapy and beyond. The upstat program offered us the opportunity to take trips outside the facility. Trips to restaurants, church, the local animal shelter. All of which helps enormously with getting reacquainted with society as an addict in recovery. Definitely not a 5 star chef but the food was good enough for me. The only complaint I have to this day was a level of disregard and unwillingness from the higher “behind the scenes” staff at recognizing my longing and commitment to recovery and at one point refusing my return to the facility. While I do recognize was ultimately a result of my own actions, do feel strongly contributed to my relapse. That said, my experience there motivated me to try again and commit long term, knuckle thru and make it work elsewhere which I eventually did. And will always be so very grateful for this place and the people/staff that were part of my journey. (I just hope if the director is still the same person that they have made necessary adjustments.) Hopefully if the staff that knew me is still there they see this and know I’m doing amazing and so grateful for them. thank you guys!

Going to through rehab at BRS turned out to a surprising great experience. I’ve been to a few rehabs in the last few years and BRS is the nicest rehab I’ve been to. I would have put up with a lot to finally get off the pain medication that I’d become addiction to but, I went to BRS and it was great there. So, there are pros and cons to BRS. There aren’t many cons and they are completely outweighed by the number of pros there are. The first thing is that BRS is in central Michigan. Not really a con because it’s beautiful there but, if you’re going in winter, it’ll be a step past freezing. The second con which isn’t really a con is the food. I only bring it up because the website made me think the food was going to be completely amazing and it wasn’t. It was good though so, not really something to complain about. Think Applebee’s, not Spago’s. The last con, which isn’t really a con for the clients is that sometimes it seemed like there weren’t enough people working there. The staff at BRS is incredibly dedication to helping others and they are good at their job but, I think they were run a bit ragged sometimes. Now, the pros. The building is really nice. BRS looks and feels like you’re staying in a ski lodge and it doesn’t have that institutional feeling that most rehabs have. You’re allowed to smoke at BRS. I’ve never been to a rehab where I couldn’t smoke but, I’ve heard a couple horror stories of someone checking into treatment only to have them take their cigarettes away. Which sounds awful. They offer different programs at BRS. Every client is about to find a program that feels right to them. The first rehab I went to only offered the 12-step program. Now, I know it works for some people. I’ve talked to people that say it’s the best thing they have ever done, it helped them so much. For me, it felt weird to do. It didn’t fit with me or my personality and honestly, I until I went to BRS and was able to look at and find a different program, I thought it was normal. So, having the different programs available at BRS really is a huge benefit. The staff working at BRS are perfect for their jobs. Some of the most compassionate and understanding people I’ve ever met work at BRS. One thing that stood out to me was that to the staff at BRS, I was a person, not just an addict. They took the time to get to know me, to understand why I’d become addicted to pain meds and when I told them how I’d become addicted, they understood. With other people I’ve talked to about my addiction, it felt like once they found out that I’d become addicted, it didn’t matter how it happened, it didn’t matter that the first time I took a pain pill it came from a doctor and that everything I took actually came from a doctor. The only thing that mattered was the fact that I didn’t stop taking the pills, which made me an addict. It wasn’t like that at BRS. They took the time to understand me and my life. They helped me feel like a normal human being again and their attitude was very refreshing. You can stay at BRS for as long as you need to. I was there for 4 months but, there was someone who came and went in 30 days there and there was someone there that stayed for almost a year. It didn’t matter, you stayed for however long you need to. All in all, going to BRS was a really great experience that resulted in me being clean, sober and able to stay clean and sober. I haven’t run into any problems staying sober since getting home. I would have put up with so much to get to where I am today, I’m just glad I went to BRS because I didn’t have to put up with anything.

My daughter was in a car accident 2 years ago. During it, she broke her leg and it required surgery. Before that, my daughter had never had any problems with substance abuse. But, after her surgery the doctor prescribed pain medication and she became addicted to it. I didn’t know that she had still been using and was addicted to that pain medication until 7 months ago. I started doing a bit of research when she first came to me and asked for help. I wasn’t sure what kind of treatment she’d need but thought, or at least hoped that once she’d been detoxed off the pain medication she’d wouldn’t use again. I sent her to a 2 week detox near us. That detox wasn’t helpful at all. In fact after she got home from there she started using even more. Once she came to me for help with this she became really open about it all so when I asked her what had happened she told me. She said she didn’t want to use, didn’t want that in her life at all but she craved the pills so badly that using seemed to be her only choice. Then, when she relapsed, which wasn’t long after coming home, she stopped trying to control her addiction at all and continued to use more and more. After that, her and I agreed on her going to an inpatient rehab center and I started looking into places she could go. I went back and forth on sending her to Behavioral Rehabilitation Services because it’s out of state and I wasn’t sure her going there would really be worth it. A few things sold me on sending her there though. I wanted my daughter to be comfortable wherever she went and I felt that BRS would be good for that and when I spoke to the intake counselor and he spoke with my daughter it solidified that decision. He was really helpful in that he explained addiction and recovery to me and helped me understand it a lot better than I had, he explained the physical aspects of addiction and what that did to the person using. He helped me understand my daughter much better. With my daughter, when he spoke with her he was understanding and patient and he made sure she understood that they way she become addicted to these pain medications wasn’t that uncommon and that they could help her there. My daughter has always been pretty responsible. She didn’t become addicted to something because she went to a party, took something and kept using it. She got a prescription from her doctor that she thought was safe and it was really upsetting to her that because she trusted her doctor and what he’d given her, she’d became an addict. It made the fact that she needed treatment harder for her to come to grips with but, the intake counselor helped a lot with that and he got her to the point where she was happy about going to rehab and getting off that stuff. My daughter went to BRS 5 months ago and only came back last weekend. I wasn’t able to visit her during her program though I spoke with her and her counselors a lot during it. They kept me updated on how she was doing so I knew she was doing well. My point is that I went from seeing her the way she looked on the day she went to BRS and then didn’t see her again until 5 months later when she got home. I was floored by the difference. She’d always been good about taking care of herself but, that went away the longer she kept using. While she was at BRS she got back into the habit of exercising and eating healthy foods. When she came home she was also happy again. I know she’s just got home but, she doing everything she’s supposed to, her and I talk all the time. She’s open and honest about what she’s feeling again and she’s not trying to deal with everything all by herself anymore. Since going to BRS she’s changed a lot, all for the better and I attribute all of that to the time she spent at BRS.

For nearly 20 years my sister has had problems with drugs. Ever since she was a teenager. Until 3 years ago though, I didn’t think of her as a drug addict. She’d use for a while, usually for around 6 months and then she’d stop by herself. Usually for around the same amount of time. When she did use she never used daily from what I could see. We all knew it was a problem but, couldn’t ever get her into rehab because as soon as our parents would start looking at places to send her, she’d stop by herself and it’s really hard getting someone to agree to go to drug rehab when they aren’t currently using drugs. She went to BRS 9 months ago, 3 years before that is when everything started going downhill. She started using more, stopped having any amount of time when she was sober and became a true drug addict. She was arrested twice for possession which turned out to be a good thing. The first time was a wake-up call for her. She finally realized that she was getting worse. The second time she was arrested she agreed to go to treatment. Our parents sent her to BRS for numerous reasons. They wanted a place where she’d be comfortable and BRS is that. It’s actually really beautiful there with a building that looks more like a lodge than a rehab. They have multiple programs there which was perfect for us. My parents have done a lot of research on addicts and recovery these last 20 years, there are so many different programs out there and they didn’t want the burden of finding the right treatment for her. This way they just had to get her there and the professionals could figure it out. BRS also doesn’t have a time based program. The people that go there are there for as long as they need to be. My sister was there for 6 months and she thrived there. She became so much happier, much less jaded with life and was easier to get along with. She’s been home for 3 months now and while we have had stretches where she was sober for this long before it’s got a completely different feeling to it this time. It’s not that she a new person or anything like that but she did change a lot while she was at BRS and all for the better. I know that as long as she keeps doing whatever it is she’s been doing she won’t use again.

None of the information provided on this site about brs is accurate. There are only 2 “trails”, one is actually quite nice, the other is a loop thats used as a driveway. There is no personal chef or nutritionist on staff. The food is actually horrible. Ive had better food in jail. You dont get to pick class in a “college style” manner. All classes are the same regardless of level of care. 6 hours of class a day with a 15 minute smoke break every hour. There is no psychologist on staff, just a Dr (MD?) that comes in 1-2 a week for an hour or 2. Individual counseling consists of 1 session for less than an hour once a week. There is no financial training , 12 step study, faith based anything, aromatherapy or nutrition classes. The “yoga room” is in the classrooms or outside after classes end. There is no counseler on site 24/7. Securtity can be found outside smoking in stead of watching after clients, not to mention that they are all kids, some as young as 19. Please dont waste your money on this place based on the description of this place.
