About Next Step Sober Living at Pres House
The Next Step Sober Living Program helps UW Madison students and young adults in substance use recovery build healthy lives together. Since 2014, it has provided safe housing and is certified by the Wisconsin Association for Sober Housing. Participants share a spacious 4 bedroom apartment at Pres House Apartments, with water and internet included. Residents quickly feel at home as they can cook meals, host movie nights, or relax on the balcony, while finding support and community in a welcoming environment.
Through Pres House scholarships, residents can also participate in Candid Corps and Future Focus, programs that support personal growth, life skills, and planning for life beyond college.
Support, Accountability, and Community
Participants commit to recovery by creating an individual recovery plan and maintaining a substance-free home. They live together in an assigned apartment within Pres House Apartments, offering support and accountability to one another. Each participant joins support meetings, engages in activities, and continues work, education, or community service. Successful participation earns monthly rent credit. While Pres House is not a substance-free facility, applicants in active recovery and with 6–9 months of sustained recovery are best suited for this supportive, certified sober living program.
